PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Legal Newsline) - Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin announced a $2,614.45 order on Tuesday against a Central Falls business owner after he allegedly failed to pay wages to his employees.
Milad Shabo pleaded nolo contendere to one count of violating a final order of the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training (RI-DLT) related to payment on separation by an employer. Shabo, the owner of Comeback Venture LLC, doing business as Solo Burgers, allegedly failed to pay three of his employees, Megan O'Rourke, Celine Lacroix and Alexa Stufano, for hours they worked between May 2012 and August 2012.
"Withholding earned wages from employees is illegal and we will prosecute to the fullest extent possible," Charles Fogarty, the director of RI-DLT, said.
The employees filed complaints with the Labor Standards Union resulting in a December decision that ordered Shabo to pay $2,614.45 in wages. Shabo allegedly failed to comply with or appeal the order. The matter was referred to Kilmartin's office for criminal prosecution.
"Failing to pay employees the wages they earned and failing to comply with an order by RI-DLT will result in prosecution by my office, placing you before a court," Kilmartin said.
Shabo was sentenced to three months probation and ordered to pay restitution to the three former employees in the amount of $2,614.45.
