MADISON, Wis. (Legal Newsline) - Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen obtained a judgment on Friday against a Sheboygan County frozen pizza maker for allegedly violating Wisconsin's wastewater and pollution discharge laws.
Van Hollen filed a civil complaint against Luige's Frozen Pizza Inc. in January 2012. Luige's, the operator of a frozen pizza assembly and packaging plant, allegedly failed to file reports with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources that would have recorded and monitored a pond at its facility that was permitted to receive industrial waste from the facility.
"Wastewater permits designed to prevent groundwater pollution are an important safeguard to insure against contamination of our valuable natural resources," Van Hollen said. "Such permits must be adhered to, and violations will be enforced."
Under the terms of a stipulated agreement and order, Luige's must pay $17,000 in forfeitures and penalties. If Luige's fails to comply with the terms of the agreement and order, the company must pay an additional $1,000 in forfeitures for each month of noncompliance for a maximum of $12,000.
Sheboygan County Circuit Court Judge Edward Stengel also ordered Luige's to complete multiple requirements meant to determine if there are pollutants in the pond that are seeping into the groundwater.
