Polls show tight Senate races in southern states

WASHINGTON (Legal Newsline) - New polling date indicates incumbent senators from three southern states may be vulnerable come Nov. 4.

The states where senators could possibly lose their seats include Arkansas, Kentucky and North Carolina, according to recent polls conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation for The New York Times' The Upshot.

In Arkansas, Republican Rep. Tom Cotton trails the incumbent Democrat, Sen. Mark Pryor, by 10 points. Forty-six percent of those surveyed said they would vote for Pryor if the election were held today.

In Kentucky, the poll shows that only a single point separates the two candidates seeking the Senate seat, with 44 percent saying they would vote for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, while 43 percent would select Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, a Democrat.

McConnell's Tea Party challenger, Matt Bevin, trails Grimes by six points, the poll shows.

In North Carolina, state Rep. Thom Tillis, a Republican, trails Sen. Kay Hagan by two points. Forty-two percent of voters would vote for the incumbent Democrat if the election were held today, the poll shows.

Republicans must capture six seats in November to regain control of the Senate.

The NYT/Kaiser polls were conducted April 8-15.
