BALTIMORE (Legal Newsline) - Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler praised the Maryland General Assembly on Monday for giving final approval to legislation that will increase the state's minimum wage.
The law will increase Maryland's minimum wage to $10.10 by July 2018. Increasing the minimum wage was one of Gansler's top legislative priorities entering the 2014 General Assembly session.
"Boosting the take-home pay for hardworking Maryland families will improve the economy of our state by putting more purchasing power where it can do the most good," Gansler said. "These are dollars that put food on the table, clothes on children's backs and roofs over the heads of nearly 500,000 Maryland workers. Most of those who will benefit are women who need this pay hike to better provide for their families. And the inclusion of a wage hike for developmental disability workers is a welcome bonus."
Gansler said the law helped low wage earners and dealt with the concerns of Maryland businesses.
"Passage of this legislation is a critical step to addressing the income inequality that persists in our state and our nation," Gansler said. "The final product balanced the obvious need to increase pay among low-wage earners, while addressing concerns that it would hurt businesses."
