RALEIGH, N.C. (Legal Newsline) - North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper announced the recovery on Friday of packages that should have been sent from North Carolina to locations in Central America.
Medrano Express, a now-defunct company that specialized in shipping items to Mexico, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Columbia, allegedly failed to deliver some packages to their destinations. Cooper's office received 57 complaints from North Carolinians alleging items they shipped never arrived at their destinations.
The Federal Maritime Commission and Miami Dade Consumer Protection recently found more than 200 boxes collected by Medrano Express that were abandoned in a Miami warehouse. While the commission was unable to obtain the names of the people who shipped the items, it was able to recover invoices. Some of the packages appear to have been shipped from Medrano Express locations in Raleigh or Charlotte.
"People shipped packages that never got delivered as promised, but now we may be able to return some of these items to their rightful owners," Cooper said. "We're urging consumers to contact us right away if one of these packages could be theirs."
Any North Carolina consumer who shipped packages that never arrived through Medrano Express can contact Cooper's Consumer Protection Division.
The owner of the warehouse plans to donate to charity any packages not claimed by March 28. Cooper's office is working to extend the deadline to provide consumers with more time to reclaim their packages.
