Ariz. AG says rental car company cheated customers

Tomhorne

PHOENIX (Legal Newsline) - Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne announced a lawsuit on Wednesday against a Phoenix rental car company and its owner for allegedly engaging in deceptive practices.

Dennis Saban is the owner of multiple rental car companies in the Phoenix area, including Saban's Rent-A-Car LLC, D S Rentco Inc., and A-AAAble Rental Ltd., doing business as Saban's Rent a Car and Phoenix Car Rental. Horne's office received more than 150 complaints from consumers related to Saban's companies.

Saban and his companies allegedly disconnected or concealed engine warning lights, failed to provide a receipt when vehicles were returned, obscured odometers and mileage, rented vehicles that were unsafe and did not comply with state regulations, charged for shuttle service to and from the airport without disclosing the charge, charged fees that were not disclosed at the time of the rental and falsely advertised airport tax savings to consumers.

"Many customers complained about this businesses failure to disclose additional fees to renters, and stated that Mr. Saban became abusive when they inquired about extra charges added at the end of the rental." Horne said. "Our undercover investigation also confirmed customers' complaints that Saban's Rent-A-Car rented vehicles with part of the odometer reading blacked out, mischaracterized the documents signed by renters, refused to provide copies of the full rental agreement and identified additional fees as 'taxes'."

Horne's lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction prohibiting Saban and his companies from renting vehicles. The suit also requests the payment of consumer restitution, attorney fees and civil penalties and disgorgement of profits gained through the allegedly illegal acts.
