SEATTLE (Legal Newsline) - Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson warned consumers on Thursday about email scams related to a recent payment card data breach at luxury specialty department store Neiman Marcus.
The store recently announced that some of its customers' payment cards were fraudulently used after making purchases at its stores. Neiman Marcus said it would send an email offering free credit card monitoring and identity theft insurance to all of its customers who shopped with the company online or in the store in the past year.
While credit monitoring services can help consumers keep tabs on their credit reports and alert them of suspicious activities, Ferguson's office warned consumers to be on the lookout for email phishing scams that appear to originate from Neiman Marcus. Such scam artists may attempt to obtain personal information from the recipients.
Sign up instructions for the free credit card monitoring service from Neiman Marcus are available on the company's website. Scam artists seeking to capitalize on the data breach may ask for personally identifying information before sending the recipient to the Neiman Marcus website. The fraudster may ask for information under the guide of confirming the validity of the presented information.
The store reminded customers if they used the Neiman Marcus card, Discover, American Express, MasterCard or Visa, they have zero liability for unauthorized charges if the charges are reported in a timely fashion.
