AUSTIN, Texas (Legal Newsline) - With early voting around the corner, three out of the four Texas Supreme Court justices up for reelection this year will face competition from members of their own Republican party in the March primary.
The deadline for filing for statewide offices passed on Dec. 9. Early voting for the March 4 primary will be from Feb. 18 to Feb. 28.
First up in the GOP primary for the Texas Supreme Court is Chief Justice Nathan Hecht, who will square off against former state Rep. Robert E. Talton.
Also worth mentioning is the candidacy of Tom Oxford, plaintiffs attorney for Beaumont law firm Waldman Smallwood, who will be running for chief justice as a Libertarian.
In the race for Place 6, Joe Pool Jr. will oppose recently appointed justice Jeff Brown.
Justice Phil Johnson of Place 8 will attempt to fend off fellow justice Sharon McCally, who currently has a seat on the 14th Court of Appeals in Houston.
Justice Jeff Boyd will face no challengers in the GOP primary for Place 7. However, Libertarian candidate Don Fulton will seek to usurp his seat.
The ballot for Supreme Court races has yet to been finalized as of Jan. 9 by the Texas secretary of state, according to the Texas Supreme Court blog.
