AUGUSTA, Maine (Legal Newsline) - Maine Attorney General Janet Mills has alerted Maine consumers about a Massachusetts man who was barred from running a home repair business in that state.
Richard Myers, who did business as Atlantic Restoration Company, was sued by Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley's office in 2006 for allegedly violating the Home Improvement Contractor Act. Myers allegedly engaged in home improvement work on a suspended license, requested excessive cash advances, failed to perform agreed-upon work, failed to apply for required building permits and failed to refund homeowners' payments for work not performed.
In February 2011, a final judgment was entered against Myers that required him to pay $300,000 in civil penalties, more than $291,000 in consumer restitution and more than $125,000 in fees.
Mills' office recently received a complaint about Myers' business activities in Cumberland County. Mills said Myers could be operating elsewhere in the state using different business names.
"Consumers should be wary of doing business with this person," Mills said. "His track record in other states is poor. He has been ordered by a court in another state to stop engaging in the home contracting and repair business. Maine homeowners should be on guard against hiring him to do work for them."
