Update: Neb. AG doing well after surgery for colon cancer

LINCOLN, Neb. (Legal Newsline) -- Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning is recovering after what his staff described as a "successful surgery" for colon cancer.

In a tweet, Bruning sent his thanks for all of the support he has received since telling reporters Wednesday about his diagnosis. He also encouraged others to get screened.

The attorney general told reporters that the cancer was discovered before Thanksgiving during a colonoscopy. A finger-sized polyp was removed and later found to be cancerous.

He underwent surgery Thursday at St. Elizabeth Regional Health Center in Lincoln to have a portion of his colon and some lymph nodes removed, according to The Omaha World-Herald.

A spokesman for Bruning told the newspaper there were no complications and lab results, expected next week, will decide if additional treatment is needed.

The attorney general told reporters this week he still plans to run for re-election, seeking his fourth term.

Bruning, a Republican, was a member of the state Legislature from 1996 until resigning in 2002, when he was first elected as the state's top lawyer.

Nebraska's primary is set for May 13, 2014. The general election is Nov. 4, 2014.
