BOSTON (Legal Newsline) -- Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley announced Friday a $325,000 settlement with a New York-based trucking company that allegedly failed to pay fees covering the handling and transportation costs of hazardous waste.
Price Trucking Company allegedly failed to pay more than $191,000 in hazardous waste transporter fees to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
The state's Hazardous Waste Management Act requires all transporters of hazardous waste to pay quarterly transporter fees based on the amount of hazardous waste transported. The fees are collected to make sure the waste is transported safely.
Price also allegedly failed to submit reports that tracked the volume of transported hazardous waste between July 2009 and January 2010.
"Ensuring public safety is an important part of doing business in Massachusetts," Coakley said in a statement. "These fees help to pay for emergency services that protect the public from dangerous hazardous waste contamination and we are pleased that this settlement will bring money back to the commonwealth."
Coakley's office first filed a complaint against Price in November 2011. MassDEP suspended Price's transporter license in January 2010 after it allegedly fell behind in its quarterly hazardous waste transporter fee payments in late 2008.
Price's license has since expired and the company no longer operates in the state as a hazardous waste transporter.
