Five apply for Tenn. SC vacancy

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Legal Newsline) -- Two Memphis judges, two private attorneys and a law professor are among the five applicants for a vacancy on the Tennessee Supreme Court.

On Thursday, the state's high court announced that the following candidates submitted their applications for the court opening:

- Christopher Bright Craft, criminal court judge on the 30th Judicial District in Memphis;

- William Lewis Jenkins Jr., a partner at Dyersburg-area law firm Wilkerson Gauldin Hayes Jenkins & Dedmon;

- Holly M. Kirby, judge on the state Court of Appeals, Western section, in Memphis;

- John Brook Lathram, a member of the Memphis-area law firm Bass Berry & Sims PLC; and

- Steven J. Mulroy, professor at University of Memphis Humphrey's School of Law.

The newly-created Governor's Commission on Judicial Appointments will meet in Nashville Nov. 13 to interview and hear public comments regarding the applicants.

Earlier this year, Justice Janice Holder announced she will not seek retention of her seat in the August 2014 general election.

Holder, the third woman to serve on the state Supreme Court, was the first woman to serve as chief justice, a role she held from September 2008 through August 2010.
