Poll: Majority of voters still think Utah AG should resign

PROVO, Utah (Legal Newsline) -- Survey results released last week show that a majority of Utah voters still think Attorney General John Swallow should resign.

The poll results came a month after the U.S. Department of Justice, which worked in coordination with the FBI, said it would not bring any charges against Swallow, a Republican.

And this week, the Utah State Bar closed its case against the attorney general.

However, Swallow remains under investigation by the state House of Representatives, the Lieutenant Governor's Office and the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office for various ethics and election law violations.

That still has many voters concerned about the attorney general, according to the results of a poll conducted by Utah Data Points.

The website serves as a blog for Brigham Young University's Center of the Study of Elections and Democracy.

According to the survey results, 71 percent of Utah voters think Swallow should resign.

That number is down from 78 percent in a June Utah Voter Poll, researchers noted.

Also in the June poll, 34 percent of respondents said they thought Swallow had done something illegal. In the most recent survey, that number decreased to 26 percent.

However, the number of respondents who said the attorney general has done nothing illegal but has done something unethical increased from 62 percent in June to 66 percent in this month's survey, researchers noted.
