MILWAUKEE (Legal Newsline) -- Wisconsin lawmaker Jon Richards has joined the race for state attorney general.
The Associated Press reported Wednesday that Richards, who was first elected to the state's General Assembly in 1998, has filed the necessary paperwork to run for the office.
According to his legislative biography, he is an attorney in Milwaukee and has been a "champion" of reforming health care in the state.
Richards, a Democrat, currently serves on the Joint Committee on Finance, the Legislature's budget committee, along with the Assembly's Financial Institutions Committee and the Joint Legislative Committee on Audit.
On Monday, Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel announced he is running for attorney general.
Schimel, a Republican, was first elected district attorney in 2006. He previously served as an assistant district attorney in Waukesha County starting in 1990.
Both are looking to take over for current Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen, who announced last week he will not seek a third term as the state's top lawyer.
