FAIRBANKS, Alaska (Legal Newsline) -- Former Alaska Attorney General Daniel S. Sullivan announced Tuesday he is running for U.S. Senate.
Sullivan, a Republican, is seeking Sen. Mark Begich's seat. Begich, a Democrat, is up for reelection next year.
Sullivan first worked for the Perkins Coie law firm in Anchorage, focusing on commercial and corporate law.
In 2002, he headed the International Economics Directorate of the National Economic Council and National Security Council staffs at the White House. In that capacity, Sullivan advised former President George W. Bush.
He left the White House in 2004, and in 2006 he was appointed by Bush to U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Economic, Energy and Business Affairs.
Sullivan served until January 2009. Soon after, he was appointed Alaska's attorney general by then-Gov. Sarah Palin.
He then served as commissioner of the state's Department of Natural Resources, until resigning last month.
According to the Washington Post, Sullivan will face Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell and Joe Miller in the GOP primary.
