BOSTON (Legal Newsline) -- Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley warned state residents Friday about companies seeking money to obtain a copy of a deed to a home.
Deed collection service companies offer to sell homeowners a copy of the deed to their home for $50-90.
While the solicitations appear to be from a government office or look like an invoice that demands payment or compliance by a certain date, homeowners are not actually required to pay these entities or buy a copy of their deed.
"Homeowners should not spend a significant amount of money to obtain a copy of the deed to their home," Coakley said. "We advise residents to contact their local registry with questions."
Many homeowners receive a copy of the deed to their property at the closing for purchasing their home. Homeowners also are able to obtain a copy of their deed for free or for a nominal fee by visiting the Registry of Deeds.
Multiple companies previously solicited Massachusetts homeowners to buy copies of the deeds to their homes at much more than the actual cost of obtaining the documents.
The companies include Property Transfer Services, National Record Service, Proxy Data Retrieval LLC, Record Retrieval Department and Record Transfer Services.
