N.H. AG warns about utility scam

CONCORD, N.H. (Legal Newsline) - New Hampshire Attorney General Joseph Foster and Public Utilities Commission Director of Consumer Affairs Amanda Noonan have warned utility customers about a scam currently operating in the state.

A number of consumers issued complaints to Foster and Noonan's offices related to calls received from individuals pretending to be with the customer's utility company. In the utility scam, the caller claims the customer has a past due balance on his or her utility account. The caller then threatens to shut off utility services unless the delinquent amount is paid. The scam artist makes the calls to small business customers late in the day and gives the customer a few hours to make the payment.

The calls are not actually coming from New Hampshire utility companies. The calls are from scam artists attempting to obtain financial information from the callers, such as credit card or bank account information. Foster's office said that calls of this nature should be reported to his consumer hotline or the Public Utilities Commission.

Utility customers scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment will receive a written notice a minimum of 14 days before any proposed disconnection date. The notice also includes information the utility customers can take to maintain service.
