Report: R.I. senator considering run for AG

Dawsonhodgson

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Legal Newsline) -- State Sen. Dawson Hodgson said last week he is considering a run for Rhode Island attorney general.

Hodgson, a Republican, told Rhode Island Public Radio Thursday that he "would like to be" the state's next attorney general.

"I'm in the the very early stages of organizing a campaign for that office, and over the coming months, I'll be speaking with my family, my friends and constituents to determine whether I have the sufficient support to continue in public service," he told RIPR's Political Roundtable.

Hodgson is currently the deputy minority leader of the Senate, and is a member of the committee on government oversight, committee on judiciary and committee on labor.

An attorney and businessman, he is a graduate of St. George's School, Bucknell University and the University of Connecticut School of Law.

He was first elected to the Senate in 2010.

Hodgson, if he decides to run, likely would face current Attorney General Peter Kilmartin, who is expected to seek re-election.

Kilmartin, a retired police captain and a former member of the state House of Representatives, was elected to the office in 2010. He is a Democrat.
