COLUMBUS, Ohio (Legal Newsline) -- Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine on Wednesday announced that he has named Eric Murphy as State Solicitor for the Attorney General's Office.
"Eric Murphy is an outstanding attorney, and his experience working in the U.S. Supreme Court and in private practice has prepared him well to handle the state's most important appeals," DeWine said.
The state solicitor, who is appointed by the attorney general, focuses on the office's major appellate cases.
The majority of the cases handled by the solicitor are argued in the U.S. Supreme Court and the Ohio Supreme Court.
However, some cases within the solicitor's responsibilities are under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the state appellate courts.
The solicitor represents the attorney general before the state's high court and other appellate courts, as needed.
He or she also writes most of the amicus briefs filed by the Attorney General's Office.
Murphy joins the Attorney General's Office after serving as an associate with Jones Day in Columbus.
He served as a law clerk to Justice Anthony Kennedy at the U.S. Supreme Court, and he also clerked for Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
Murphy will start Sept. 9, DeWine said.
