CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Legal Newsline) -- Wyoming Supreme Court Justice Barton Voigt announced his retirement Monday.
Chief Justice Marilyn Kite, who serves as chairman of the state's Judicial Nominating Commission, said Voigt's retirement is effective Jan. 3.
Voigt served as a county judge in Gillette for two years and as a district judge for eight years in Douglas.
He was appointed to the Supreme Court by then-Gov. James Geringer in 2001, and served as chief justice from 2006-10.
The state's Judicial Nominating Commission will accept "expressions of interest" from qualified individuals to fill the vacancy through Sept. 23.
Gov. Matthew Mead will appoint a new justice from a list of three names submitted to him by the commission.
Serving on the commission are Kite; three lawyers elected by the Wyoming State Bar, Robert Shively, Bruce Salzburg and Jeremy Michaels; and three non-lawyers appointed by the governor.
To serve as a Supreme Court justice, one must have a law degree, been in actual practice and/or a judge for nine years, be at least 30 years old, a citizen of the United States and a resident of Wyoming for the past three years.
