MADISON, Wis. (Legal Newsline) - Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announced a $42,153 judgment on Wednesday against a bankruptcy attorney who identified himself as The Light Hero.
Van Hollen's office filed a lawsuit against Emory Booker, III, and Legacy Legal Group LLC, doing business as The Light Hero, in U.S. District Court in Milwaukee. Booker recruited clients using street poster advertisements that touted his company's services to prevent utility shut-offs, referring to himself as The Light Hero. Booker allegedly engaged in repeated and flagrant violations of his responsibilities to bankruptcy clients from the poorest areas of Milwaukee.
Individuals who responded to Booker's posters were allegedly told to file for bankruptcy without an attorney. Clients paid Booker for legal representation, but the clients allegedly never received Booker's services. Booker allegedly misrepresented his services to clients and failed to make required disclosures.
Van Hollen's lawsuit requested that the court order Booker to refund all the fees he received from his bankruptcy clients.
The court determined that Booker owed former clients $36,768 worth of fees and awarded Van Hollen's office $5,385 for attorney fees. The total judgment against Booker was $42,153.
