BALTIMORE (Legal Newsline) -- Two former Maryland attorneys general are expected to back state Sen. Brian Frosh at a news conference in Baltimore Tuesday.
The Baltimore Sun's Maryland Politics blog reported that J. Joseph Curran Jr. and Stephen Sachs will endorse the longtime state lawmaker.
Curran held the office from 1987-2007. Sachs was the attorney general before that, for two terms, from 1979-87. Both are Democrats, like Frosh.
Frosh, a member of the Senate since 1995, last month made the decision to run for attorney general in 2014.
He currently chairs the Judicial Proceedings Committee, is a member of the Executive Nominations Committee and the Legislative Policy Committee. He also serves as vice-chair of the Rules Committee.
Frosh said he wants to be "the people's lawyer."
"In a world where powerful special interests seem to get all the breaks, too many Marylanders feel like their voices aren't being heard," he wrote in an email to supporters. "They want to know they've got an advocate who will fight for them. They want to know someone has got their backs.
"That's why, after much encouragement from Marylanders across the state, I've decided to run for attorney general."
Prior to his time in the Senate, Frosh also served in the House of Delegates, serving two four-year terms.
Current Attorney General Doug Gansler is considered a strong candidate for governor in 2014, though he hasn't formally announced a run.
However, Gansler's campaign manager has said an official announcement is expected in September.
According to The Sun blog, state Delegates Jon Cardin of Baltimore County and Aisha Braveboy of Prince George's County have announced plans to run. Delegate C. William Frick of Montgomery also is expected to announce his bid for the office.
All three are Democrats.
