Report: Texas lawmaker likely to announce bid for AG this week

Kenpaxton

AUSTIN, Texas (Legal Newsline) -- Texas lawmaker Ken Paxton said in an email to supporters that he will be making an "important announcement" later this week -- most likely, that he will run for attorney general.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, the Republican state senator sent an email to his "closest campaign friends" saying he will make an "important announcement concerning my future plans in public service" at the Plano Centre Thursday evening.

Paxton did not explicitly say in his email that he plans to run for attorney general, but alluded to it.

"To ensure Texas remains a bastion of freedom and liberty, it is critical that the next attorney general continues the fight against Barack Obama, Eric Holder and the entire federal government, which is targeting Texas and our way of life," he wrote, the newspaper reported.

Paxton would join state Rep. Dan Branch and Railroad Commissioner Barry Smitherman in running for the GOP nomination.

Current Attorney General Greg Abbott is running for governor, following Gov. Rick Perry's own announcement that he would not seek another term in office.
