ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Legal Newsline) -- Former Public Regulation Commissioner Jason Marks reportedly has dropped out of the race to become New Mexico's next attorney general.
According to The Associated Press, Marks said Thursday he has been unable to raise enough money to compete in next year's election.
A state campaign finance disclosure showed Marks, a Democrat, received about $23,000 in contributions.
Meanwhile, his primary opponent, State Auditor Hector Balderas, has raised more than $200,000, the AP reported.
Marks just finished up two terms on the state commission before opening an exploratory committee in February.
He was looking to replace current Attorney General Gary King.
King was first elected as the state's top lawyer in 2006 and is eligible to run for re-election.
However, King has said he will seek the Democratic nomination for governor in 2014, running against Republican Gov. Susana Martinez.
