N.J. AG issues reminder about gun buyback

TRENTON, N.J. (Legal Newsline) - New Jersey Acting Attorney General John Hoffman reminded residents of Union and Hudson counties Wednesday about a state-led gun buyback event Friday and Saturday.

The buybacks, which will take place at three churches in each county, allow New Jersey residents to return up to three firearms of any type with no questions asked and receive up to $250 per weapon.

"These buybacks are important not only because they take deadly weapons out of circulation, but because they demonstrate the tremendous power of communities working together toward a common goal - in this case reducing gun violence and saving lives," Hoffman said. "I invite the residents of Hudson and Union Counties to join us in making New Jersey safer this coming weekend by turning in their unwanted firearms."

The buyback event this weekend is a cooperative effort between multiple law enforcement agencies, including the state Division of Criminal Justice, the Hudson County Sheriff's office, the Union County Sheriff's office and the New Jersey State Police.

To date, the statewide gun buyback has taken approximately 12,500 lethal firearms out of circulation, including approximately 1,500 illegal guns and 6,000 handguns. Hoffman urged residents to use extreme caution in transporting their weapons by unloading the weapons and securing them in a fastened and closed case, gun box, securely tied package or locked vehicle trunk.
