TOPEKA, Kan. (Legal Newsline) -- A Kansas state agency tasked with regulating natural gas, electricity, telephone, transportation and oil industries said this week it will ask Attorney General Derek Schmidt to defend it in a case alleging it violated the state's Open Meetings Act.
According to the Topeka Capital-Journal, the Kansas Corporation Commission made the decision Tuesday to draft a letter asking for Schmidt's help.
The commission also wants the attorney general to conduct a review of its open meetings practices, but doesn't want him to issue an opinion, the newspaper reported.
The commission, according to its website, regulates natural gas, electricity, telephone, transportation and oil industries "requiring safe, adequate and reliable services at reasonable rates." It also regulates some water utilities.
Last week, a Shawnee County district attorney filed a lawsuit against the commission, alleging it violated provisions of the Open Meetings Act in deciding a water rate case.
