DENVER (Legal Newsline) -- House Minority Leader Mark Waller is expected to enter the race to become Colorado's next attorney general next week.
Waller, a Republican, was first elected to the state House of Representatives in 2008.
Fox 31 Denver reported Wednesday that Waller will be making a "big announcement" Monday. According to the news station, there is "little question" he will be announcing his candidacy to be the state's next top lawyer.
The announcement will take place at his alma mater, the University of Denver's Sturm College of Law, Monday morning.
Waller would face Cynthia Coffman, Colorado's chief deputy attorney general.
Coffman, a Republican who has served as the office's chief deputy for more than eight years, announced she was running for attorney general earlier this month.
The wife of former Colorado Secretary of State and current U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman, Coffman was selected by current Attorney General John Suthers to serve as his top deputy in March 2005.
The 2014 race is an open one. Suthers, also a Republican, is constitutionally term limited.
He took the office in January 2005 following the departure of former Attorney General Ken Salazar, who resigned to take his seat as a U.S. senator.
Suthers then was elected to a full term in November 2006 and re-elected in 2010.
Former Adams County District Attorney Don Quick, a Democrat, kicked off his 2014 campaign for attorney general in February. He formally launched his campaign in May.
In addition to being a prosecutor for 25 years, Quick also served as an assistant to Salazar.
According to Fox 31, former U.S. Senate candidate Ken Buck, who is now cancer free, also is expected to the join the race.
Buck, a Republican, planned to run prior to his melanoma diagnosis earlier this year, the news station reported.
