COLUMBUS, Ohio (Legal Newsline) - Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine has announced an agreement with the former manager of a scholarship fund who allegedly misappropriated charitable solicitations.
Toledo resident Matthew Casey was the former manager of the Mike Casey Memorial Fund scholarship fund, which was named for Matthew Casey's father. Casey allegedly misappropriated some of the charitable funds and transferred some of the money to his personal account.
"Those who oversee charities are obligated to make sure that the donations they receive go toward their designated purpose," DeWine said. "This case clearly shows that my office won't tolerate and will go after anyone who uses charitable funds for personal purposes."
Casey allegedly misappropriated approximately $18,696.51 of charitable funds between 2005 and 2012 while he controlled the fund, including $12,050 in cash withdrawals, a $3,600 transfer to his personal account and $3,046.51 in checks made payable to his name. Casey repaid approximately $12,862.50 to the fund.
Some of the additional $5,834 in undocumented cash withdrawals was for legitimate expenses related to golf outings held for the fund.
Under the terms of an assurance of discontinuance, Casey must pay a $2,400 fine to DeWine's office and must no longer hold any position in or participate in soliciting donations for Ohio charitable organizations. Casey will be charged $40,000 or true damages for each failure to comply with the agreement.
