COLUMBUS, Ohio (Legal Newsline) - Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine announced a consent order Tuesday with Cardington Yukata Technologies, an auto parts manufacturer that allegedly violated state water pollution laws.
CYT allegedly discharged process wastewater and non-contact cooling water from its facility to the wastewater treatment plant of the village of Cardington without authorization and in violation of the state's industrial pretreatment standards. The wastewater caused interference at the village's industrial plant.
Under the terms of the consent order, CYT must alert the village of Cardington and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency about significant changes to discharges from its facility on West Main Street and pay a $500,000 civil penalty for violations of Ohio water pollution laws.
"We are glad that this consent order is in place and that it will help to ensure the protection of the village of Cardington's wastewater treatment system and Whetstone Creek," DeWine said.
As part of the agreement, at various points within the next 90 days, CYT must compete an environmental audit of its Cardington facility; install, operate and maintain meters at the facility to monitor leak test flow and wash water flow; install a metering manhole for the monitoring of discharged wastewater; submit a permit-to-install application for the installation of any pre-treatment or treatment systems; and submit a permit application for the discharge of non-contact cooling water.
The consent order follows a November federal case in which CYT and three former managers pleaded guilty to criminal violations of the Clean Water Act between 1999 and 2008.
