TRENTON, N.J. (Legal Newsline) - New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa has announced that a Middlesex County apartment complex had agreed to pay $22,5000 to resolve allegations that it denied housing to a man over rental subsidies.
The Glenwood Apartments and Country Club in Old Bridge, owned by the Brunetti Organization, will pay a total of $15,000 to the mother of the late Lyle Rosen to settle his discrimination complaint.
Lyle Rosen allegedly attempted to lease an apartment and pay approximately 70 percent of his rent with Section 8 housing vouchers in October 2005. He was rejected within days of applying. The Division on Civil Rights issued a finding of probable cause in March 2007 that Glenwood's denial of Rosen on the basis of its $40,000-a-year annual income requirement was probably discriminatory because the rent was guaranteed by Section 8 housing vouchers and Rosen showed sufficient assets to pay the remainder.
Lyle Rosen died in July 2007 and an administrative law judge issued an order in August 2009 allowing his complaint to be amended to include his mother Irene. Irene Rosen is the administrator of Lyle Rosen's estate.
In addition to the $15,000 payment to Irene Rosen, Glenwood will pay the state $7,5000. The company also agreed to require training in the Law Against Discrimination for any rental or management company it employs to screen applicants. Additionally, the company will keep detailed records of rental applications and rental inquiries for three years, including an explanation for any applicant's rejection, and make the records available to the Division on Civil Rights.
