A Maine bath company will pay up to $750,000 in fines for allegedly violating the state's Unfair Trade Practices Act, Maine Attorney General Janet Mills said last week.
National Bath Systems, which does business as Bath Fitter and is based in Portland, Maine, allegedly used construction contracts that were non-conforming, performed unlicensed plumbing activities, misrepresented employees' license status, installed plumbing before being issued plumbing permits and installed plumbing that may have violated the Maine's State Internal Plumbing Code.
“We are pleased that this company agreed to comply with our laws, provide work by licensed plumbers when appropriate and ensure their installations are in full compliance,” Mills said.
Mills said as part of the settlement the company must comply with state law. She added the consumer complaint that started the case was made through the Maine Office of Professional Occupational Regulation.
A portion of the $750,000 fine was suspended for the duration of the probationary period, Mills said. Bath Fitter will also provide a free inspection by an independent licensed plumber to any homeowner who previously used the company. The inspection will determine if the plumbing complies with state code. If it doesn't, repairs will be made at no cost to the homeowner. Consumers must request the inspection before Sept. 1.
