A Denver District Court sided with Colorado Attorney General Cynthia Coffman on Thursday, ruling that the founder of an alleged fake charity must pay nearly $6 million in fines and penalties for violating state law.
Adam Shryock, founder of the alleged fake charity fundraiser Boobies Rock!, Inc. must repay $1.89 million in gross receipts and $4 million in civil penalties, according to a ruling by Judge Shelley Gilman. Gilman also barred Shryock from ever working for or near a charitable solicitation again.
“When it comes to protecting Coloradans and successful case outcomes, it doesn’t get any better than this,” Coffman said. “Shryock is now guilty of being a repeat charity-fraud offender who harmed legitimate charitable organizations, the public and his employees through his tawdry and illegal tactics. It is fitting that Mr. Shryock will read about his fate while doing time for his crimes.”
The Colorado Attorney General's Office of Consumer Protection Section filed a civil complaint against Shryock and his business entities in 2013 alleging he was involved in charitable fraud. Shryock is serving a second sentence in Denver County Jail on charges of contempt of court.
Coffman said Colorado residents should research and take extra steps to look at background on organizations and leaders of charitable foundations before donating money. Suspected fraud can be reported to StopFraudColorado.gov.
