OVW, the Office on Violence Against Women, recently commemorated Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, highlighting the theme of "Building Connected Communities." The agency emphasized the importance of collaboration and community support in preventing sexual assault and aiding survivors. According to OVW, creating strong, connected communities is crucial for ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals.

Speaking about the impact of sexual assault, OVW expressed a commitment to addressing systemic barriers and providing support to survivors. They emphasized the significance of including diverse voices from agencies, organizations, and community partners in fostering a Coordinated Community Response, with a focus on centering survivors' voices and experiences.

In line with their efforts, OVW announced the launch of new grant programs in 2024 to advance their goals. Among these programs is the Demonstration Program on Trauma Informed, Victim-Centered Training for Law Enforcement on Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking. This initiative aims to enhance law enforcement and prosecutors' responses to such cases, with a survivor-centered and trauma-informed approach.

Additionally, OVW introduced the Enhancing Investigation and Prosecution of Gender-Based Violence Initiative to promote effective policing and prosecution responses, particularly in cases of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The agency highlighted the importance of addressing emerging issues like technology-facilitated gender-based violence, with new grant programs focusing on cybercrimes against individuals.

The agency also published the 2022 Biennial Report to Congress, showcasing the impact of VAWA-funded efforts nationwide. The report revealed that OVW grant programs have provided millions of victim services, hotline calls, protection orders, and professional training sessions, demonstrating a substantial contribution to supporting survivors of gender-based violence.

Furthermore, OVW stressed the federal government's role in supporting employees impacted by sexual assault, intimate partner violence, or stalking, both in and outside the workplace. They emphasized the importance of creating safer work environments and preventing sexual harassment through collaborative initiatives with federal agencies.

As part of their ongoing efforts, OVW co-hosted events and webinars to address gender-based violence, including collegiate athletes' experiences of abuse. These initiatives aimed to raise awareness, identify indicators of abuse, and provide recommendations for supporting survivors in various contexts.

In conclusion, OVW encouraged continued efforts to raise awareness and support survivors beyond Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. They emphasized the collective impact of storytelling, training, and policy improvements in building connected communities that prioritize safety, healing, and justice for all individuals.
