Attorney General Merrick B. Garland announced the opening of nominations for the Seventh Annual Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service in Community Policing. The awards aim to recognize the efforts of law enforcement officers who actively engage with their communities to promote safety and trust.

According to Attorney General Garland, the awards "represent part of the Justice Department’s ongoing commitment to support the nation’s law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe."

The Attorney General’s Award specifically acknowledges individual state, local, and Tribal sworn, rank- and-file police officers and deputies who demonstrate exceptional efforts in community policing. Awards will be given in three areas: criminal investigations, field operations, and innovations in policing. Recognition will also be given to law enforcement agencies serving small, medium, and large jurisdictions based on population size.

In a statement, the Justice Department emphasized its national commitment to community policing and proactive policing practices that are fair and effective. The Department aims to promote and sustain these practices by acknowledging and rewarding the dedication of law enforcement officers, deputies, and troopers who work tirelessly to ensure the safety of communities across the nation.

The deadline for nominations is May 6 at 8 p.m. ET. Those interested in submitting nominations or seeking more information can visit www.justice.gov/ag/policing-award.
