Metal Cycling, Prolerized New England to pay $1.25 million for alleged health, environmental violations

BOSTON (Legal Newsline) – Alleged violation of several environmental and public health and safety statutes has resulted in a $1.25 million judgment against two vehicle and appliance crushing and recycling companies.

Metal Cycling LLC and Prolerized New England Co. LLC are both said to have been in violation Massachusetts Public Health Law by emitting pollution such as asbestos, hazardous waste, and volatile organic compounds at their two factories. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey prosecuted the companies.

Both entities will have to pay a civil penalty of $900,000 as well as individually fund up to $300,000 towards a supplemental environmental project to remove piles of waste tires in three locations in Middleton. The companies must also provide up to $50,000 toward a program to recycle mercury-containing consumer products.

“Companies that emit pollutants must be careful and abide by all laws put in place to protect the public and our environment,” said Healey. “These dangerous substances endanger public health, and have detrimental effects on our precious natural environment.”
