Idaho AG settles with Utah security system business

BOISE, Idaho (Legal Newsline) - Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden announced Friday a settlement with a Utah-based home security company that allegedly violated the state's Consumer Protection Act by using deceptive sales tactics.

Vision Security LLC sales representatives allegedly misrepresented the terms of the company's security system contracts when conducting door-to-door solicitations. The representatives also allegedly failed to fulfill their promises to buy out consumers' contracts with their current security system.

As a result, some consumers were allegedly left paying monthly monitoring fees to two companies or large termination fees to cancel one of the monitoring agreements.

Additionally, Vision Security's representatives allegedly failed to provide consumers with accurate information about the time permitted to cancel contracts.

"The purchase of a home-security system is a significant investment and consumers should feel safe knowing that the people selling them are providing truthful and honest information, without hidden fees or misrepresentation," Wasden said.

Under the terms of the settlement, Vision Security will pay restitution to Idaho consumers who paid early termination or buyout fees to their prior alarm monitoring companies. The company also agreed to make several changes to how it does business in Idaho, including no longer misrepresenting the condition of a consumer's current security system or that a consumer's home is located in a high-crime area.
