W.Va. AG warns of Target gift card scam

Morrisey

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Legal Newsline) - West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey warned consumers on Monday about a Target gift card scam occurring throughout the country on social media websites.

As part of the scam, consumers are purportedly offered a Target gift card to make up for the December data breach. In reality, the offer is part of a scam that directs consumers to fake domains pretending to be Target.

"Scammers have taken to social media websites to prey on consumers offering them a Target gift card supposedly as a way to make up for their data being breached," Morrisey said. "This is scam. Target has not offered gift cards in response to this incident. Consumers also need to be wary of fake domain names pretending to Target popping up."

Target recently announced that close to 70 million consumers may have been affected when company credit and debit cards were breached in December. While the company is not offering gift cards, it is offering one-year free credit monitoring to all consumers who ever shopped in a Target store.

"It is important to remember to be extremely protective of your personal information," Morrisey said. "If consumers receive communications or offers appearing to be from Target, they should call Target to confirm the communication is legitimate and report any instances of fraud to our office."
