Oregon AG shuts down unlicensed naturopath

Kroger

SALEM, Ore. (Legal Newsline) - Oregon Attorney General John Kroger announced on Thursday that an acupuncturist who allegedly operated naturopathic medicine in the state without a license is now banned from performing that service in Oregon.

Paul Shandor Weiss allegedly misrepresented his licensing status in violation of state law. Under terms of an agreement he signed with Kroger, Weiss' Arura Clinic of Natural Medicine in Ashland, Ore., is no longer allowed to offer naturopathic medicine.

"Oregonians must be able to rely on the credibility of health care providers," Kroger said. "We will not permit unlicensed practitioners to put our personal safety at risk by misrepresenting their qualifications."

Although Weiss was formerly licensed as a naturopath, he surrendered that license in early 2010 after a notice of proposed discipline that identified concerns about his treatment of numerous patients was issued.

The Oregon Department of Justice learned of his actions from the state Board of Naturopathic Medicine, which is responsible for licensing and regulating naturopathic physicians in Oregon.

Under terms of the settlement, Weiss will pay $50,000 to the Department of Justice and will surrender his acupuncture license. He is also no longer allowed to provide any type of healthcare service in the state of Oregon.

"I want to thank the Board of Naturopathic Medicine for their assistance on this case," Kroger said.
