McCollum
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Legal Newsline) - Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum will not be the state's next governor after falling to Republican challenger Rick Scott Tuesday in the primary election.
Scott will face state Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink in the general election. McCollum called his race against Scott, who poured millions of his own dollars into his campaign, "one for the ages."
"No one could have anticipated the entrance of a multimillionaire with a questionable past who shattered campaign spending records and spent more in four months than has ever been spent in a primary race here in Florida," McCollum said.
Scott spent at least $50 million on his campaign, the Miami Herald reported.
McCollum is leading the 20-state challenge of federal health care reform. While in office, he has helped bring about reforms in the area of outside counsel being hired to represent the State.
He was trying to once again succeed Charlie Crist. The current governor was attorney general before McCollum and is in a three-way race for a U.S. Senate seat.
McCollum spent 20 years in the U.S. House of Representatives.
