GREENBERG TRAURIG: Greenberg Traurig’s Henry Greenberg Sworn in as President of the New York State Bar Association

General court 09

Greenberg Traurig, LLP issued the following announcement on June 7.

Henry M. Greenberg, a shareholder in the Albany office of global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, was sworn in by Janet DiFiore, chief judge of the Court of Appeals and the state of New York, as the president of the New York State Bar Association(NYSBA) on Thursday, June 6. Founded in 1876, the NYSBA is the largest voluntary state bar association in the United States.

Greenberg assumed the role on June 1; within days he set in motion a new diversity initiative for the NYSBA and appointed diverse leaders to all 59 of its committees.

“It is a moral imperative that our profession better reflects the diversity exemplified by our clients, and we can no longer accept empty rhetoric or half-measures to realize that goal,” Greenberg said. “It’s the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do, and clients are demanding it.”

“Hank has a clear vision for the initiatives he has laid out as president of the New York State Bar Association,” said Harold N. Iselin, managing shareholder of Greenberg Traurig’s Albany office and co-chair of its Government Law & Policy Practice. “I am confident in his skills and determination to create a more diverse profession and grow the NYSBA in an inclusive and empowering manner.” Iselin delivered remarks about his Albany colleague during the swearing-in ceremony.

Greenberg has been active within the NYSBA for more than 20 years, beginning in the Young Lawyers Section. He is chair of the Committee on the New York State Constitution, vice-president of the 3rd Judicial District, and a member of the Executive Committee and House of Delegates. He also was chair of the Committee on Court Structure and Operations, Legislative Policy Committee, Special Committee on Law School Loan Assistance for the Public Interest, and Committee on Attorneys in Public Service.

In addition to his current role as NYSBA president, Greenberg serves on a number of professional committees and has leadership positions in other bodies. He is counsel to the New York State Commission on Judicial Nomination, which nominates New York’s Court of Appeals judges; chairs the Third Department Judicial Screening Committee and the New York State Fair Advisory Board; and is a member of the State Judicial Screening Committee, Judicial Task Force on the New York State Constitution, and the State Commission on the Restoration of the Capitol. He is also vice chair of statewide programming for The Historical Society of the New York Courts.

Greenberg concentrates his practice on civil litigation, criminal and civil investigations, health law matters, and regulatory and administrative law. He has previously served as counsel to New York State Attorney General (now Governor) Andrew M. Cuomo, counsel to the lieutenant governor of New York state, an assistant U.S. attorney (AUSA) for the Northern District of New York, and law clerk to then Associate Judge (later Chief Judge) Judith S. Kaye of the New York Court of Appeals.
