HOLLAND & KNIGHT LLP: Mitchell Geller and Laura Güemes Honored as Pro Bono Attorneys of the Year by KIND-New York

By Press release submission | Dec 26, 2018

Holland & Knight issued the following announcement on Dec. 20.

Holland & Knight Partner Mitchell Geller and Associate Laura Güemes were named 2018 Pro Bono Attorneys of the Year by Kids In Need of Defense (KIND)'s New York office. They are among five New York-based attorneys chosen for the honor.

Each year KIND honors a select group of attorneys for their exceptional work and commitment to providing the highest level of pro bono legal services to their clients. In 2018, KIND's New York office worked with more than 850 pro bono attorneys.

Mr. Geller and Ms. Güemes were awarded for their work representing a 20-year-old woman from Guatemala in connection with her Petition for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS). Their "very well-written brief" in the matter was later used as a template for other pro bono attorneys who had received denials in their own over-18 SIJS petitions.

Mr. Geller is a member of Holland & Knight's New York Litigation Practice Group. He focuses on commercial, corporate, real estate and estate litigation, including contract disputes, indemnity claims, misrepresentation and fraud claims, antitrust and securities litigation, professional malpractice claims, and trade secret and restrictive covenant disputes.

Ms. Güemes is a member of the firm's Financial Services Team and focuses her practice on cross-border financing transactions, regularly advising corporate borrowers, a wide range of lenders, project sponsors and developers on syndicated lending as well as project finance.
