FOX ROTHSCHILD: Fox Rothschild Now Has Five Certified Appellate Specialists in North Carolina

Court room

Fox Rothschild LLP issued the following announcement on Nov. 30.

Fox Rothschild LLP congratulates Patrick M. Kane and Kip D. Nelson, the latest members of the firm’s Appellate Practice to earn certification as appellate specialists from the North Carolina State Bar Board of Legal Specialization.

Kane and Nelson join fellow Fox attorneys Matthew Nis Leerberg, Robert H. Edmunds Jr. and Elizabeth Brooks Scherer in earning this prestigious designation. With five attorneys holding this accreditation, Fox is now the law firm with the most appellate specialists in North Carolina.*

Certified appellate specialists undergo an intensive review process and extensive examination by North Carolina’s Board of Legal Specialization, which requires a lawyer to demonstrate special training, experience and knowledge in the field to ensure that recognition as a certified specialist is a meaningful and reliable credential.

Fox is home to an impressive roster of seasoned appellate attorneys who have keen insight into the effective strategies for winning arguments before a judicial panel. The firm’s North Carolina Appellate Practice team, led by Leerberg, regularly works on cases before the Supreme Court of North Carolina, the North Carolina Court of Appeals and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Members of the group write frequently for the firm’s North Carolina Appellate Blog, which provides news, information, tips and resources for practicing law in North Carolina's state and federal appellate courts.

Kane, a partner with the firm, handles complex litigation in both state and federal courts and has tried cases to jury verdicts for clients in commercial, labor and employment, constitutional and contract cases. He earned his J.D. from Wake Forest University and his B.A. from the College of the Holy Cross.

Nelson, an associate, represents clients in a range of litigation matters. He has an active appellate practice in both state and federal courts and has argued before the Supreme Court of North Carolina and the North Carolina Court of Appeals. He earned his J.D., summa cum laude, and LL.M. from Duke University and his B.S., magna cum laude, from Brigham Young University.

Leerberg, managing partner of the firm’s Raleigh and Wilmington, NC, offices, focuses his practice on helping businesses navigate state and federal litigation and appeals.

Edmunds, counsel and former Senior Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of North Carolina, helps clients navigate complex criminal and civil appeals in state and federal court.

Scherer, counsel, assists attorneys throughout North Carolina in preparing their appeals, complying with rules of appellate procedure and correcting appellate rules violations.

This team of appellate specialists joined Fox through its recent merger with Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP, bringing a competitive edge and a wealth of knowledge to the firm’s nationwide appellate practice.
