Former University of Chicago employee alleges she was fired in retaliation, files False Claims Act lawsuit

CHICAGO (Legal Newsline) – A woman alleges a Chicago university terminated her from her position as an executive administrator after more than 30 years of employment because her objection to participate in an alleged scheme.

Barbara Kass filed a complaint on Sept. 8 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois against the University of Chicago alleging retaliatory discharge, wrongful termination and other counts.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that her employment with the University of Chicago was terminated on April 6 as "a direct result of her objections to and refusal to participate in the scheme to prepare and submit a false and misleading departmental budget that included unlawful use and allocation of federal grant money."

The plaintiff holds the University of Chicago responsible because the defendant allegedly retaliated against the plaintiff for her efforts to stop a violation of the False Claims Act.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks reinstatement, back pay with interest, compensatory damages, special damages, all legal fees and any other relief as this court deems just. She is represented by David H. Latham of Latham Law Offices in Chicago.
