TOPEKA, Kan. (Legal Newsline) – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced an agreement with American Handicapped & Disadvantaged Workers Inc. that will force the company to refund consumers for alleged deceptive activities.
The company, along with its president and CEO Adli Najib Dasuqi of Waterford, Michigan, admitted to selling household goods to consumers under the guise of charity. The company would allegedly call consumers and attempt to sell them things like light bulbs, trash bags, kitchen scissors and cleaning products and falsely exaggerate the business’s nature, telling consumers the company had a charitable purpose. The price of these household goods vastly exceeded market prices.
Under the terms of the agreement, the company must refund Kansas consumers who request refunds. Additionally, it will have to pay $10,000 in penalties and fees.
Schmidt advises consumers who wish to support charities to do their homework beforehand.
“Make decisions about what charities to support on your own schedule instead of responding to a telephone solicitor,” Schmidt said. “If you do get a call that sounds like something you are interested in supporting, ask the caller to mail you information in writing so you can check out the charity before giving. Never be pressured into making a contribution over the phone.”
