JACKSON, Miss. (Legal Newsline) - Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood says he plans to seek a fourth term as the state’s top lawyer.

Hood made the announcement Friday.

“With the citizens of Mississippi in mind, I have decided today to seek a fourth term as your Attorney General to finish the business you elected me to do,” he said on his Facebook page. “As Mississippi’s chief law enforcement officer, I will continue working to make our state safer.”

He continued, “You are largely responsible for the success of our office. Through your support we continue to make Mississippi a better place for law-abiding residents.”

Hood is the only Democrat to hold a statewide elected office, and he is the first to file for the attorney general race.

He told The Associated Press last week that he considered going into private practice, but decided against it.

The qualifying deadline for party primary and independent candidates for both the primary and general elections is Friday.

The state’s primary election is set for Aug. 4.

The general election is Nov. 3.
