Roll Call calls Callis' U.S. House campaign a 'flameout'

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (Legal Newsline) – Roll Call continued to paint congressional hopeful Ann Callis as dead in the water Tuesday, placing the Democrat on its “9 Biggest Candidate Flameouts” list.

On Sept. 29 Roll Call reported House Majority PAC, a super PAC with ties to Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, cancelled around $1 million in races throughout the Midwest and Northeast, including the race for Illinois’ 13th Congressional District, indicating Callis, Madison County’s former chief judge, may be losing support in her fight to unseat U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis.

A week earlier, on Sept. 22, Roll Call reported Illinois voters favor the Republican freshman representative by a 55 to 36 percent margin.

On the flameout list, Roll Call listed Callis as second.

“Democrats rolled out the red carpet to recruit Callis to run in this down-state district — even bringing her to Washington, D.C., for Obama’s 2012 inaugural festivities. Democrats deemed Callis as their best recruit to take out … Davis … who won this swing seat in 2012 by less than 1 point,” the article states.

“But for all of her hype, Callis’s campaign never got much traction.”

After the article’s release, Katie Prill, a spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee, tweeted “Oh my, this is harsh” along with posting a link to the list.
