BOSTON (Legal Newsline) -- Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley is running for governor.

Coakley, the first woman to serve as the state’s top lawyer, made the announcement Monday, kicking off a three-day, 18-stop statewide tour.

“I am so excited to announce today my candidacy for governor of Massachusetts,” she said.

“

We are coming out of this tough economic crisis, but many families are still struggling. The reason we are going to emerge from this and build a better future is because of our people. The same people I’ve had the privilege to serve with and for throughout my career.

“The people of Massachusetts are tough, smart, resilient, and we care about each other.

These folks are the reason I’m running for governor. You need someone who will fight for you. Someone who will take your side. I’ve done that as attorney general and I’ll do it as governor.”

Coakley made stops in Medford, Brockton and Attleboro Monday. Her campaign released a video announcement earlier in the day.

According to the Boston Globe, the two-term attorney general is heading into a crowded Democratic primary.

At this time, her opponents include: Treasurer Steven Grossman; Juliette Kayyem, a one-time homeland security official; Donald Berwick, a former health care official for the Obama administration; and Joseph Avellone, a biotechnology executive.
