N.J. dentist has license revoked

Chiesa

NEWARK, N.J. (Legal Newsline) - New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa announced on Thursday that the State Board of Dentistry has revoked the license of a Manalapan dentist and assessed penalties for alleged fraud and misconduct.

Marc Weber, who practiced dentistry in Red Bank, allegedly committed gross negligence by failing to take x-rays that were readable, treating healthy teeth that did not need dental work and failing to diagnose decay. Weber also allegedly committed professional misconduct and fraud by steering patients improperly to companies that financed dental treatments without revealing that he and his staff received financial benefits from such referrals.

The board revoked Weber's license to practice and assessed $250,000 in civil penalties, $160,286 for legal expenses and $32,858 in restitution to ten patients. The civil penalty is payable over 10 years. Weber cannot re-apply for licensure for at least three years and must undergo counseling and physical and mental health examinations before reapplying for licensure.

"These strong sanctions illustrate how our licensing boards mete out discipline in order to protect the health and safety of the public," Chiesa said. "The Board of Dentistry weighed the facts and based its decision on the actions committed by Dr. Weber."
