NEWARK, N.J. (Legal Newsline) - New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa and the Division of Consumer Affairs filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against six furniture companies and their two operators for alleged Consumer Fraud Act violations.
Lev Stanik and Roman Tyger operate six furniture businesses called Tyger Furniture, also known as TG Furniture Group; LaFurniture Group Inc.; LaFurniture Corp.; LaFurniture & Design Ltd.; LaFlat Group Inc.; and LaFlat Inc. The businesses are located in Edison, Fair Lawn, Lyndhurst, Ridgefield and Rahway. Some transactions were also conducted through multiple websites the defendants maintained.
Customers alleged that they were unable to obtain refunds for merchandise from the companies that they either did not receive or did not order.
In some cases, the customers were allegedly not informed that the furniture they ordered was discontinued. In addition, refund checks given to some consumers allegedly bounced as a result of insufficient funds, among other alleged violations.
The defendants allegedly missed specified delivery dates, failed to replace damaged or non-conforming furniture, failed to deliver furniture, failed to issue refunds, charged consumers after orders were cancelled, failed to display the selling price, employed bait and switch tactics, and failed to post a refund policy. The defendants also allegedly violated mail order practices and advertising regulations.
"The alleged deceit and deception committed by these defendants will not be tolerated," Chiesa said. "Consumers were defrauded of their hard-earned money and we are working to obtain restitution and to hold these defendants accountable."
Approximately 39 consumers have filed complaints against the defendants and allege they are collectively owed more than $100,000.
