Ind. AG alleges Super Bowl scam

Zoeller

INDIANAPOLIS (Legal Newsline) - Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller filed two lawsuits on Thursday against two Arizona-based home rental companies for allegedly scamming Hoosiers.

Super Week Lodging and Major Event Rentalz allegedly took money up front and failed to provide services or refunds for Indiana consumers. Zoeller's office is seeking civil penalties, attorney fees and full refunds for consumers.

During the Super Bowl in February, many companies in the out-of-state home rental industry offered to photograph, list and rent the homes of residents to football fans. Zoeller's office received 16 complaints against Super Week Lodging and five against Major Event Rentalz.

Super Week Lodging allegedly took payments from consumers ranging from $850 to $1,495, totaling more than $19,630. Major Event Rentalz allegedly took payments that ranged from $450 to $5,544 and failed to provide refunds or services to customers. The company's fees charged totaled more than $8,900.

The companies allegedly both operated with the purpose of deceiving Indiana consumers. Both companies allegedly advertised that they would aid residents in renting their homes by listing the properties on their websites for a fee. The companies allegedly promised a refund if the homes were not rented.

"Although the Super Bowl brought positive attention and business to Indianapolis it also brought in scammers who intended to deceive and take financial advantage of consumers," Zoeller said. "Our office will aggressively pursue these companies and hopefully prevent them from preying on innocent homeowners next year."
